Over three decades we’ve earned quite the reputation
Fortunately, it’s a good one. It’s not the number of years you’ve been in business that builds your reputation, it’s the experience in those years that matters. Since 1977, SMR Architects has been firmly rooted in our community with a commitment to preserving history, creating sustainable spaces and designing for people. Our team’s combination of wisdom and talent is the platform from which we design living spaces: structures that are reverent to history, meet the needs of the present, and have the flexibility to remain relevant and vital well into the future.

When Scott realized in high school that architecture was one of the few professions to combine his favorite subjects (art, math, and science), he was decided. He got an unpaid internship at Davis Fenton Stange and Darling, earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees and the rest, they say, is history. At SMR, Scott uses design as a tool to meet clients’ needs and solve challenges: “I love coming up with solutions to difficult problems.”

It’s Andy’s ability to see the potential in every structure that makes him extremely adept at his specialty, historic preservation. “I love watching a building transform. I get to see it in a physical state that few people will witness and get to understand all its working parts.” Andy enjoys knowing each building he works on from the inside-out: “every old building has character, and each one can be accentuated somehow to become a landmark.”

For Kate, architecture has always been a passion. She incorporates insights from her world travels into her design process to make buildings comfortable and inviting: “the neighborhood, language or climate can really effect the population and the outcome of the building you design.” Through her work, Kate loves that she gets an opportunity to challenge herself and design housing that’s beautiful and emotionally stimulating while also fulfilling a community need for affordable housing.

Megan grew up watching This Old House with her dad: “I loved seeing the process of a project come together.” Someone suggested she pursue architecture when her collection of floor plans became just a bit too large. Upon graduating from the University of Oregon in 2006, Megan volunteered with Engineering Ministries International, where she collaborated on projects including a vocational school, orphanage, and sustainable farm center. Megan’s belief in accessible housing and desire to support a community-focused vision led her to SMR in 2012.

Demian is driven to make a difference: “there is an infinite amount of work that needs to develop around affordable housing, human services, and advocating for its funding.” When it comes to considering the tenants’ experiences and the details involved in creating an excellent living space, Demian’s passion is second to none. “When you’re considering a tenant’s comfort and enjoyment, the small things are important.”

His specialties include 3D modeling, rendering, graphic work, drafting, and detailing. Currently, John is also a sitting board member for the Seattle chapter of Architecture for Humanity.

When his 5th grade teacher taught perspective drawings, David just knew he liked to draw. It was later, during a high school drafting class, when he became hooked on architecture. In 1997, immediately after high school, David got his degree in Drafting and began working with single-family housing developers. He earned his BA in Architecture from the University of Washington in 2011. David brings a pragmatic outlook to the SMR team: he believes that “a building must meet its function as easily as possible for its users.”

Noah grew up in North Dakota in a 100-year-old American Foursquare where his love for architecture began. With a push from his high school art teacher, he began to explore architecture as a career. The more he explored, the more sure his interest became. “Architecture has the ability to positively impact our lives, most intimately through the spaces we live. I believe that is something everyone should have the opportunity to experience." Noah graduated with a Masters of Architecture in 2015 from North Dakota State University and moved to Seattle to begin his next chapter with SMR.
